Breathtaking Family Photos at Jasper Lake
Jasper Lake is such a special family photo location in Jasper National Park for three big reasons. The first is that it changes completely with every season. Jasper Lake is actually part of the Athabasca River, and so when the river is high, the wide sand flats of the lakebed are underwater. But when the river is low, like it is in the late summer and fall, then it becomes a really unique location for family photos. Especially in the evening as you’ll see in these photos! The second reason is that there are dramatic mountain views in all directions; although the face of Roche Miette to the northeast (near to the Miette Hot Springs) is perhaps the most impressive. The third reason is that, aside from the incredible lakeshore and sand, there are lots of unique areas to explore nearby.
That’s what makes Jasper Lake a perfect choice for families and couples who are looking for a dramatic location for their mountain photos in the late summer and early fall. The evening light at that time of year is beautiful, and really adds to the photographs.
Getting to Jasper Lake
Jasper Lake is located along Highway 16 between Jasper and Hinton, Alberta. It is around 25km distance from the Jasper townsite, and there is a very long pullout with outhouses that stretches alongside the highway on the lakeshore. The drive from town is scenic, and passes through areas where Bighorn Sheep and Elk are frequently spotted along the roadside.
Next to Jasper Lake is Talbot Lake, and both of these lakes offer a wide range of beautiful photo locations. It is only about 13km from Miette Mountain Cabins and the Miette Hot Springs road, and about a 20 minute drive from the Overlander Mountain Lodge and Folding Mountain Brewery.
