In this post I'm going to share some of the things that make Old Fort Point such a great photo spot in Jasper. So read on!
Or just look at the pictures, I don't mind.
The trails around Old Fort Point have some beautiful mossy forest paths that can provide a great variety of images and backdrops for pictures. From the warm, golden light filtering through the trees at dusk, to the vibrant green of the moss and pine on either side of the trail, every step adds something unique to your photos. It's an undeniably peaceful and intimate atmosphere that helps make the session just an enjoyable time together. There are also beautiful views along the shores of the Athabasca River right next to the Old Fort Point parking lot. No matter what time of year you visit, Old Fort Point offers a really great variety of options for your couples photos. There is a lot to be said for those long evenings of sunlight in the summer and fall, but even the depths of winter can be stunning!
Once you get up Old Fort Point itself (after many, many stairs) there are countless different vantage points that offer stunning views across the valley around the Jasper townsite and the Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge. With the ability to capture both landscape shots as well as close-up details there’s no shortage of possibilities for creative engagement photos. Whether you want classic poses or just some fun candids walking along the edge, there’s something to suit everyone. Some people prefer to wear runners or hikers for the walk up, as there are some steep and gravelly spots, and then to switch into other shoes for the photo one we are up top. It is totally up to you and your personal style preference what type of footwear you wear for your photos, but we recommend solid shoes for the walk up!
The evening is the best time to take photos at Old Fort Point. With views south towards Mount Kerkeslin and Mount Edith Cavell, west towards Whistlers, And north towards Pyramid Mountain and Old Man mountain, there are so many backdrops to play with the late evening light setting down to the west towards Mount Robson. Although morning and afternoon at Old Fort Point can also be beautiful, the light can sometimes be quite harsh due to the exposed face of the hill being open to high sunlight.
After sunset is a time when Old Fort Point shines. The alpenglow of the fading sun off the mountain peaks as well as the warm colors from the setting sun provide great color variety and depth to your photos. So if you’re looking for engagement photos from up high at dusk or in the alpenglow or twilight, it doesn’t get much better than Old Fort Point! I can never get over how beautiful Mount Edith Cavell is at this hour, like you see in these shots below.
After taking photos at Old Fort Point, Jordan and Lewis opted to take some photos under the starry night sky by adding a Dark Sky package upgrade on to their session. It was a perfect night for the milky way! We love to take advantage of the incredible night skies here in the Jasper Dark Sky Preserve. The most accessible times are the fall and winter with the short days, but year round the night sky in Jasper offers up really special and unique experiences. We frequently see the milky way, shooting stars, and even sometimes the aurora borealis, or northern lights.
